“Rebecca” follows the story of a young woman (Lily James) marrying Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a recently widowed socialite. Now the lady of Manderley, the new bride must rise up from her middle class status to fit into the role of a wealthy socialite’s wife. Yet the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Kristen Scott Thomas), is still obsessed by the late Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca, and refuses to let her memory die. Unsure of herself in her new life and her new marriage and haunted by Rebecca, the main protagonist must unravel what happened to her predecessor and what exactly Manderley is hiding behind its walls.
The movie follows the original storyline perfectly, and some super fans will even recognize some memorable lines from the book in the dialog. The movie’s tone is overall suspenseful as the story progresses, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats with every scene. While following the book, the movie is fast paced, and if not familiar with the story, it can be a bit confusing. Nonetheless, the performances are riveting and truly sells the story to the audience.
