Following the recent release of “The Kissing Booth 2,” the internet became flooded with mixed thoughts on this highly anticipated sequel. While some dreaded its release after the first film, others were ready to give the teen rom-com another chance. Many were desperately looking for answers to the many things left undeveloped at the end of the first film. With all the different thoughts on the recent release, it was time to see what all the talk was about.
“The Kissing Booth 2” is a Netflix film based on Beth Reekles’ popular book series. It follows the story of Elle, a highschool girl who faces challenges due to her long-distance relationship. In the first film, Elle struggles to accept her feelings for her best friend’s brother, Noah. She can’t get romantically involved with him as it goes against the friendship rules she has with Lee. Elle tries to keep her new relationship with Noah a secret, but the truth eventually comes out. As if there weren’t enough issues in the first movie, new conflicts arise in the sequel. Will Noah leave Elle now that he’s at Harvard? Should she give up her plan to attend UC Berkeley with Lee and choose Harvard instead in order to keep Noah by her side? Once again, she must choose between her love for Noah and the friendship rules.
Throughout the film, a lack of communication seems to be a common theme. The sequel has more depth when it comes to the personal issues each character faces and highlights what high school students go through, trying to figure themselves out and planning their future.
As expected, the movie is predictable, which makes it easy to follow. At the beginning of the film, they explain everything you need to know from “The Kissing Booth” with a series of clips and narration, so if you decide to skip the first movie, that’s no problem!
What some may find annoyingly cliche, others may enjoy when watching the movie. While the story centers around Elle and Noah, you still get to see what other characters face throughout their last year of high school. “The Kissing Booth 2” is the kind of movie you watch when you need a mental break and don’t want to do much thinking. It offers an inside look into a teenage love story but isn’t challenging in terms of the plot.
