In 1969, murders across the Los Angeles area rocked the U.S. and sparked the end of what was considered the “golden age” of Hollywood.
The murders were committed by the Manson Family, led by Charles Manson. Among those killed was actress Sharon Tate, whose promising career had only just begun.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” takes a look at the end of Tate’s life through multiple interacting storylines. The Quentin Tarantio film respects the delicacy of situation while also entertaining audiences with a humorous, fictitious side story.
The film follows fictional actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his friend/stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) as they deal with the possibility of failing careers and the end of their relationship. A parallel storyline involves Tate (Margot Robbie) and her husband Roman Polanski (Rafał Zawiercha), who have recently moved next door to Dalton.
As the movie progresses, Dalton, Booth and Tate each interact with members of the Manson Family, including Tate meeting Manson himself. While the movie features actual events from Tate’s life and activities from the Family, the story ends in a comical, slightly-revolting manner that differs from reality.
DiCaprio and Pitt’s performances in this film were incredible, reminding everyone of their abilities in front of the camera. Robbie doesn’t take the backseat to the leading men, showcasing her talents in the film.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is a classic Tarantino film, including the sometimes hard-to-watch gruesomeness. It serves as both educational and entertaining, and is a must see for 2019.
