There are many sounds that mean summer, like splashing water and cold ice clinking in a glass of lemonade. For some, another sound of the warmest season is the crack of a driver against a golf ball. There’s no better time than now to think about taking up a new sport like golf, it’s a perfect way to spend time with friends or family. This sentiment is agreed upon by the folks at Aggieland Driving Range.
Range manager Micheal Damian believes that the range lends a helping hand to those looking for entertainment. “It’s great for the customers to get outside, after being cooped up at home,” Damian says. “They can practice social distancing out in the sun.”
Damian has worked at the range for several years. What started as a part time job in high school has flourished into a full time management position. His love for golf has served as a motivation to help others realize their love for it too. “I’ve played golf my whole life, my dad got me into it,” Damian says. “It’s always fun to see sons and daughters spending time with their parents.”
The Range has been around for about seven years. The current owner, Kenny Trinh, is constantly improving the range to bring more amusement to customers. The range had to shut down briefly due to the pandemic, but it’s only made the establishment stronger. “It was the perfect time to renovate and expand,” says Damian. “And as soon as they gave us the okay, we reopened our doors.” After reopening, they saw a huge number of customers come to the range.
If one thing’s for sure, it’s that there is no shortage of fun at Aggieland Driving Range. Among the ideas that are now reality are trampolines as targets and even a new putting green, but it’s being held off until Covid-19 becomes less of a concern. There’s a Gator tractor for customers to aim at, similar to the concept of an old car being used as a target. The range also makes sure all equipment is safe for use after each customer. The range uses bleach and water to clean supplies, including door handles. “We clean every little thing,” Damian says.
If you’re looking for something to do on Independence Day, the range shop won’t be open, but golfers are encouraged to enjoy the range using the pay machines out front or golf balls to hit. The restrooms will also be available, and golfers can stay out as late as 10:45 p.m., when the flood lights turn off on the range. With the many targets and accessibility of Aggieland Driving Range, Damian agrees it’s an easy choice for fun. “Anyone who’s trying to take up golf, I would advise to be patient with it,” Damian says. “Once you put time into it, it can be a whole lot of fun. It’s a good and unique sport and skill to pick up, and it’s a great way to exercise.”
Golf can be enjoyed by all ages, and trying out Aggieland Driving Range would be a great place to start what could be a lifelong love of the sport. At less than $20 a bucket, it’s certainly worth taking a swing at.
