Intersections at SEAD Gallery

0

SEAD Gallery and Bookshop, located in Bryan, is presenting a new and exciting art show called “Intersections.” This will be the gallery’s first juried fiber arts show, featuring the best fiber arts that Texas has to offer.

SEAD, an acronym standing for Science, Engineering, Art, and Design is a juried art gallery, community space, and events venue featuring regular exhibits by local, state, and international artists.

For those of us unfamiliar with the work, fiber art is a medium in which the artist uses natural or synthetic fiber, as well as other components like yarn or wool, to sew or weave a piece that focuses on a particular memory or idea that is unique to the artist. All it takes is a single fiber material or fiber technique to be present for the piece to fall under the category of fiber art. While there is contemporary fiber art that is associated with materiality and technique, at its core, fiber art is just like any other medium and offers observations, themes, and concepts to explore.

For this showing, there will be a guest juror, Amie Adelman, who is an associated professor and fibers coordinator at the University of North Texas. Adelman has been conducting research on textiles in over 10 countries and has exhibited artwork both at the national and international levels for almost 20 years. Her art has been showcased in books and journals, such as “American Craft,” “Surface Design,” and several others.

Among the artists whose work will be displayed are Bailey Currie, John Vessel, and Kim Paxson, to name just a few of the finalists. The exhibit at the SEAD Gallery will run from September 21 to November 11th.

At the opening, there will be a raffle for a 100% wool, handwoven shawl, generously donated by the Brazos Spinners and Weavers Guild. Tickets are $10, and all proceeds go to Habitat For Humanity BCS.

Come on out for a night that will be unforgettable, as you take in art as you have never seen it.
