Cellist Zlatomir Fung at Friends of Chamber Music Concert

0

One word comes to mind when Artistic Director of Friends of Chamber Music (FCM) Elena Reece imagines the audience’s reaction to their upcoming concert. “Astonishment.”

Because at 7 p.m. March 23, the world-renowned cellist and youngest musician ever to win the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division Zlatomir Fung’s concert and interview will premier online, accompanied by pianist Dina Vainshtein.

While FCM prides itself on supporting rising stars, Reece says Fung already IS a star. “He possesses a rare gift to pull his audiences in – into the epicenter of that intense, demiurgic process of creating music during his performance,” Reece says. “So everyone should be prepared for a truly riveting listening experience.”

One unique aspect of the event is Fung’s unexpected program. His unconventional approach features opera music for this cello-piano event, including works by Donizetti, Verdi, Rossini and Wagner.

“When we finally received the concert program, we… gasped,” Reece says.

Fung will explain his reasoning for his choices during the pre-recorded Zoom interview “Encore” that audiences can watch after the concert. Marian Anderson String Quartet cellist Prudence McDaniel will also join FCM staff for this conversation.

Fung’s performance is a part of the Friends Digital Online series, meaning the concert is available for two weeks through April 6 to play whenever and as many times as you want, for any viewers regardless of location. You can literally join chamber music lovers from all over the word on Tuesday’s premier for free, but you must reserve access to the event through their website. Don’t miss this exciting concert!
