Are you a self-proclaimed history buff? Are you the reigning champion of your annual family Christmas Monopoly game? Is your older sibling both of these things and your parents are forcing you to spend time together this summer? Well, you (or your sibling) are in for a treat! Open now through Oct. 29, the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History Exhibit is featuring a special exhibit “Checkered Past: The Story of Board Games.” This exclusive, in-house exhibit explores the long and fascinating history of board games, from ancient China and the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs, to pre-Columbian Mexico and medieval Europe.
This interactive exhibit gives you the opportunity to explore the reproductions of ancient and medieval classics alongside a colorful variety of 20th century board games, and learn about their spiritual or political roots. Games featured include a rare first-edition Chutes and Ladders board (1943) and a replica of Lizzie Magie’s The Landlord’s Game (1906), the precursor to Monopoly. Classic games like Checkers, Backgammon, or Chess are also set up so while you geek out over their intriguing history, you can flex your skills on your family and friends.
This exhibit was made possible in part through Hotel Tax Revenue funded from the City of College Station & the City of Bryan through the Arts Council of Brazos Valley. Items from the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, Clockwork Games & Events in College Station, and numerous other private lenders are included in this vibrant exhibit.
The Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday. The adults admission for this exhibit is $5, seniors, students, children are $4, and children 3 and under are free.
