App Review: “Slay the Spire”

0

Platform: iOS Cost: $9.99

When the early access for MegaCrit’s “Slay the Spire” was released in the latter half of 2017, it garnered considerable praise for its intriguing, extremely fun mix of deckbuilding and roguelike RPG elements, and it didn’t even release fully until 2019! Fast forward a year later, and now “Slay the Spire” has made it onto mobile platforms. While its price tag of $9.99 might turn off some people, it is one of the best games of its type on the platform.

In “Slay the Spire,” you take control of one of three different heroes who battle their way through a procedurally generated dungeon (or Spire), creating endless variety throughout playthroughs as the dungeon is completely different every time you turn the game on. The battles occur through a deck-building style card game, and you are rewarded with better cards and artifacts after victories to help your character improve on their way.

Stylistically and mechanically, “Slay the Spire” is a top notch, fun, and addictive game. The only downside is that this game was obviously built to be played on the PC; the text is sometimes small and difficult to read on a phone, and there are other small hiccups that aren’t apparent on other versions of the game. If you can get past these issues and the steep (for a mobile app) price tag, “Slay the Spire” is a must-play for any platform you can get it on! Currently only available on iOS, plans for an Android release are in progress.
