In America, there is a growing disparity between men and women in the workforce. Despite holding 51.5% of all management, professional and related occupations, women earn approximately 80 percent of what men make, while women of color earn even less, according to a survey by the National Women’s Law Council. Because of this wage gap, women who enter the workforce face serious challenges for success, often going unrecognized. On Sunday, Americans are encouraged to celebrate and support the work and accomplishments of women in the workforce.
Sept. 22 is honored nationally as American Business Women’s Day, in commemoration of the founding date of the American Business Women’s Association. Created in 1949 by four women in downtown Kansas City, the ABWA initially sought to improve working conditions for women after World War II. Nowadays, they provide businesswomen with networking opportunities and the ability to “grow personally and professionally.” Striving to promote female inclusion in the workplace, ABWA gives members access to job openings and allows businesswomen to network with each other. Additionally, the ABWA provides businesswomen with access to seminars about the troubles relating to females in the workplace and how to be a successful entrepreneur.
Looking for a way to recognize working women, the ABWA established the first American Business Women’s Day celebration in 1982. Four years later, a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan established American Business Women’s Day as a National Holiday.
This holiday, organized by the ABWA, recognizes the hard work of women in the workforce and celebrates their contributions and the work of women business owners, much of which goes unnoticed. Each year, local chapters of the ABWA host celebrations of local businesswomen, bringing them together to connect with each other as well as have fun, and everyone is encouraged to spread empowering messages about female entrepreneurs on social media using the hashtag #AmericanBusinessWomensDay.
This year, the Bryan-College Station chapter of the ABWA is hosting a big event to celebrate American Business Women’s Day. Hosted at the Messina Hof Winery in Bryan, the ABWA invites local businesswomen and business owners to enjoy an afternoon of fun and good food while networking. The event will be hosted on Sunday, September 22nd, from 3-5 p.m.
