Album Review: “Fuzzybrain” by Dayglow

Everyone needs a chance to unwind after a long day, and whether it be by relaxing in bed and staring at the ceiling or going for a drive to nowhere, it can’t hurt the vibe to have some good music playing in the background. Indie pop artist Dayglow’s debut album, “Fuzzybrain” is the perfect blend of cheerful, relaxing and experimental to satisfy any fan of indie music.

Although Sloan Struble, later taking on the artist name Dayglow, debuted “Fuzzybrain” in 2018, he added two new singles to the track list for an official release in late 2019. Dayglow’s album was a pleasant surprise to the indie pop scene, going through rapid exposure after the release, with 1.6 million monthly listeners and about 22 million streams on Spotify of his most popular song on the album, “Can I Call You Tonight?” “Fuzzybrain” shines as a beacon of honest and complex music as it emphasizes many sentiments and themes that are common in young-adult life. Dayglow navigates issues of growing up and the various emotional complexities that come along with maturing, such as romantic entanglements, career goals and ambitions, and growing apart from childhood friends. For this reason “Fuzzybrain” feels more like a genuine message of sympathy to all young adults from Dayglow rather than a piece of content with the sole purpose of reaching for fame.

“Fuzzybrain” may have something for all fans of indie music as well as those who are looking to get into newer artists, however that doesn’t mean that every track necessarily meshes together. Of the album’s ten tracks, some do sound like conventional pop music with their fast beats and lyrics, while others are much slower and play like love letters to old crushes. None of the songs are objectively bad and each track has its own unique flavor, but when considering the album as a whole, these unique flavors may not lead to a great amount of artistic consistency.

Dayglow’s debut album is arguably a reflection of his own journey through life, and despite having a ways to go, “Fuzzybrain” shows the potential that he has to become a popular musician over the next few years.
