Album Review – “BRIGHTSIDE” by The Lumineers

0

The Lumineers took the world by storm in 2016 with their release of “Cleopatra” and with their Jan. 14 album titled “BRIGHTSIDE,” they’re ready to do it again. With the combination of rock, indie, and folk blending, this album can be your study music, car jams, or just a catchy album you’ll want to play on repeat all day.

Founded by two friends, Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites in 2005, The Lumineers started recording music in New York City, where they performed with other bands, and by 2009 they were ready to get serious. Moving to Denver, they started recording and producing with instrumentalist Neyla Pekarek and producer Ryan Hadlock. Both Schultz and Fraites also have individual and separate solo careers and albums that can be located on any streaming application or device.

“BRIGHTSIDE” is an album full of optimism and sweet sounds and even sweeter words. With lyrics that hold promise and hope such as “It will be okay,” “I couldn’t give you up” and “I’ll be your bright side,” each song expresses a light-hearted yet compelling message.

While the Lumineers’ optimism shines throughout the album, the majority of the tracks on “BRIGHTSIDE” also show heartbreak and weakness. Using melancholy chord progressions, the style reveals a negative energy, but by the end of each track, the music picks up and leaves the audience with a positive outlook. The one exception is “ROLLERCOASTER,” which breaks down the hardships of life while using slow and soft rhythms and lyrics for full effect.

Many tracks are similar in tempo, beat, and chorus organization/repetition, which is one of the only downsides to this album. The Lumineers’ unique sound can make many of their songs sound the same if any of the instrumental or vocal aspects are similar.

Whether you’re an avid Lumineers listener or are looking for something different, this is the album for you. The beautiful melodies and relaxing guitar-heavy sounds make this album and this band great, no matter the occasion.
