The award-winning Broadway musical “Once” is an unforgettable tale about following your dreams. The show features an ensemble of actors and musicians playing their own instruments live onstage. This unique story about how the power of music connects us all is coming to Rudder Auditorium.

“Once” is a musical adaptation of the independent film under the same name. The story follows an Irish singer/songwriter in Dublin named “Guy,” who fixes vacuums at a shop he runs with his father by day, and performs his own music at local pubs by night. On the verge of giving up on his dreams, a Czech immigrant, “Girl,” walks into the bar, and, captivated by his love songs, urges him to never abandon his guitar or love of music. Coincidentally, she has a broken vacuum cleaner. As he fixes it, Girl pays him back in piano music she plays in a record shop.

Guy and Girl work together over the course of a week to create beautiful music and, ultimately, fall in love. Their powerful chemistry takes his music on a journey of new heights, but their connection quickly develops into a deep and complex romance unlike any other.

At the 2012 Tony Awards, “Once” earned a total of eight accolades including Best Musical, Best Actor to Steve Kazee, and Best Direction of a Musical to John Tiffany. The original Broadway cast included stars such as Cristin Milioti, who starred in the television hit “How I Met Your Mother” as character Tracy Mosby, Ted Mosby’s wife. Additionally, the indie film the Broadway show is based off won an Oscar in 2007 for Best Original Song.

This truly original Broadway show is a once in a lifetime experience that is both emotionally and theatrically captivating. The New York Times called it “a love affair with music” and emphasized how the show “uses song and dance in a way” that have yet to be experienced in an American musical.

In a story where Guy quite literally meets Girl, “Once” takes viewers on a joy ride of magical music and love. The musical, running approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, will be at Rudder Auditorium on Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12 at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased online at boxoffice.tamu.edu. Don’t miss this theatrical experience!
