Movie Review: “The Lovebirds”

Originally set to release in theaters back in April, due to the pandemic, “The Lovebirds” dropped on Netflix in late May. The film follows a couple, played by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, who are slowly drifting apart when they witness a murder and fear they’ll be wrongfully arrested for it. Cue an epic adventure through the night as they set off to catch the real killer and clear their names, all the while trying to determine if their relationship even has a future.

There’s a lot to like about this movie: it’s pretty equal parts comedy and action-adventure, and both the main protagonists absolutely nailed their roles. Segments of the movie were predictable at times, but the film did a good job of throwing in the occasional twist to spice it up from every other wrongfully-accused-off-to-clear-his-name action movie. What really makes this movie shine is simply the comedy — the dialogue was frequently very clever, and the timing was great.

As long as the genre is something you’re into, “The Lovebirds” makes a great pick for movie night. Find it for streaming on Netflix!
