Soccer wins again

By Erica Pitman

After beating Virginia Tech on Friday, the Aggies did it again with a 1-0 win against Washington State.

The game-winning goal was scored in the 63rd minute of the match. Senior Alyssa Mautz found the back of the net with a one touch pass off of an excellent cross from Rachel Shipley.

“The goal was set up with nice combination play on our left flank,” A&M head coach G Guerrieri said.

“Shipley got end line and really threaded the needle to get the ball through the Cougar defense to Mautz. Mautz’s hustle and dedication to get on the end of that ball was the difference in today’s game,” Guerrieri said.

Mautz’s score sealed the deal on all of the Aggies’ hard work Sunday afternoon. Despite the close score, the Aggies dominated the majority of the match. The Cougar net was hammered with a total of 26 shots and with the exception of a few minutes at the start of the game and some minor counter attacks, Washington State was shutdow.

“To come in and beat a quality Pac-10 team that has been in several NCAA Tournaments recently was a good accomplishment for our team,” Guerrieri said.

“To shut them out was even better. This was a good weekend for us to gain some winning experience and it was two good games for us to continue to build on,” Guerrieri said.

With another win under their belt, Aggie Soccer is looking good and ready for more. Friday, Sept. 3, the Aggies take on Davidson at 7p.m.
