If you drive down George Bush on any weeknight this fall, you will notice the lights of Penberthy Intramural fields illuminating the night sky. Hundreds of students take a break from their studies to participate in intramural activities and compete with friends in their favorite sports. With everything from team sports like flag football, softball, soccer, and basketball, to individual competitions such as badminton, ping-pong, and even Xbox 360, there’s literally something for everyone.
Since not everyone is gifted equally when it comes to athletics, you can choose to compete in various divisions based on your skill level and competitiveness. To participate in any intramural activity, you simply have to sign up at the Rec Center and pay a registration fee. These fees vary depending on the sport, and their amounts can be found on the RecSports’ Intramurals website. If you would like to participate in a team sport but don’t have a team, you can sign up for the “Free Agent” program. You will then be assigned to play for a team in your sport and division of choice. This is a great way to meet new friends who share an interest in the same sport you do.
Besides the possibility of making new friends, there are many other benefits to participating in intramurals. First, you can learn a new skill. Sign up for a sport you’ve never played before, and give it a go. It’s sure to be a lot of fun, and maybe you’ll even discover a new favorite hobby. Second: Sports are good for your health. It has been proven that physical activity relieves stress while improving concentration and overall wellbeing. So maybe the best way to study for that test really is to play soccer. Finally, each semester intramural winners receive the ultimate prize: A Championship T-shirt. Nothing’s sweeter than getting a free t-shirt, especially when it’s one you competed for and won.
So if you’re looking for a great way to make friends and have fun this fall, get your game face on and sign up for RecSports Intramural programs. For more information on Intramural Sports log on to recsports.tamu.edu or call 862-1884.
