Texas Music Unplugged

band

It’s no secret that the past year has been very good to the “First Family of Texas Music”. The Braun family has always been a tough act to follow but in 2009 they were arguably the most talented group of brothers in the music business…take that JONAS!

Reckless Kelly is finally breaking their two-year silence with, Somewhere in Time, an album dedicated to the songs of Pinto Bennett, lead singer of the Motel Cowboys. In this album Reckless Kelly finds themselves returning to a more “country” sound and checking the rock ‘n’ roll at the door. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Somewhere in Time. The music is awesome, the song writing is superb and there is no doubt this album is going to be a big hit across Texas and the nation alike.

Another Braun family band that needs no introduction is Micky & the Motorcars. After the release of Naïve in July of 2008, the Motorcars have become one of the top touring bands on the Texas Music scene. Packed with songs like “Seashell,” “Long Enough to Leave,” and the title track, “Naïve,” it is no surprise that Micky & the Motorcars caught the attention of Texas Music fans when this album hit the shelves. For as long as the Motorcars have been known for their live performances it was only a matter of time before a Live at Billy Bob’s album was in order for the band. In November of last year they crossed that milestone and gave Texas Music fans a live album that really stands out from the crowd. Not one, but two discs, full of original hits and excellent covers, most notably Todd Snider’s “Lookin’ for a Job” which never fails to be a crowd pleaser in any setting. Also included with the album is a live DVD of the epic show that is worth taking a look at in its own right. You can catch Micky & the Motorcars right here in the Brazos Valley at the Texas Hall of Fame on Friday, February 19th for what is sure to be an awesome show.

Also this week, you can catch another talented young artist, Zach Huckabee, at Schotzi’s on Wednesday, the 23rd. Huckabee released his second album Was it you?, recorded by well-known Texas Music artist Phil Pritchett, this past year and has very easily grown to be one of my favorite new artists in the time since. Huckabee’s eclectic and soulful style is a fresh change of pace from your everyday life, go check him out and make sure to pick up one of his albums while you’re there.
