Texas Music Unplugged

By Cameron Gott

Along about the winter of 2008 a good friend of mine had an “opening gig” for a band playing the upstairs stage at Fitzwilly’s. This was not a sold-out crowd by any means but being the loyal friend and music fan that I am I reluctantly rallied up all of my friends for the show. I honestly made my way to Northgate with intentions to support my friend, Matt Easley, as the opening act and hit the bricks in search of a good time. After Matt finished his piece the Cody Johnson Band took the stage and began to play through their set list. Amidst the hustle and bustle of closing out bar tabs and saying our goodbyes each and every person in my group found themselves absolutely captivated by the stage presence of this little band from Huntsville, Texas. They were playing for a crowd of about 15, friends for the most part, crammed between pool tables and barstools, but you could clearly see that in their minds they weren’t far from the Ryman. Before they had a chance to even start the second song it was understood that we would be spending the rest of our night right there in that bar listening to the Cody Johnson Band as they turned out song after song in a seemingly flawless set list. In that little bar that night it became very apparent to me that the Cody Johnson Band had “it” and were going to take Texas Music by storm. I have had the opportunity to see them numerous times over the past few years and their live show never loses its zest. Every time I hear “What’s Left of Texas” it feels like the first time. Two years later my aspirations for them are manifested as they are continually growing and climbing the Texas Music charts week after week hot off the release of their new studio album “Six Strings One Dream”. The Cody Johnson Band has got it all, if you are looking for romance and something to dance to or a fight and something to chant to, you will find it Tomorrow night, Friday, February 12th, at the Texas Hall of Fame’s Mardi Gras Party. This is a great chance for you to discover an awesome band that you can really relate to; these are real people, just doing what they love, and doing it well, in the name of Texas Music.
