Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
By Robert McElligott
I haven’t let a movie make me cry since I was four years old watching The Brave Little Toaster, not Titanic, not Philadelphia, nothing: Precious made me lose it three times. The movie omits some of the novel’s darker subject matter, but it’s just as emotional.
The cast is perfect. Precious is the name of the main character, performed by Gabourey Sidibe, and she does everything you’d expect from reading the novel. She displays all of the fear and strength; she’s a sympathetic character but doesn’t let you feel sorry for her.
The story is about an illiterate 16 year old girl whom is about to give birth to her second child; she is supremely lost but finds strength nonetheless. The story is so merciless at times but still finds ways to be elevating. Also, if you’ve never read the novel, I’d strongly recommend you pick it up.
