Dr. Know: Hair Dye Gone Awry: Part 2

By: Candi Young

To recap, last week I talked about the problems with box dyes and a particular situation that turned my hair first gold then gold and silver, then to a sort of dull, damaged, dirty blonde mix.  So was there any hope for my hair, or had I ruined it so badly that I was going to have to cut it all off and start over?

Tara Ripper, my hair stylist, took on the challenge of getting my hair back into shape and she did a great job. First she introduced me to a great product – Redken Clear Moisture shampoo and conditioner, set me up with Redken Outshine 01 (anti-frizz polishing milk), cut off as much fried hair as I would allow (about an inch and a half), and taught me about demi-permanent hair color. When demi-permanent color “fades it does so tonally, so you don’t notice the fade like you might with a permanent color. It’s great to use if you change color often since it doesn’t completely strip your hair.” Since my hair was already so chemically damaged, demi-permanent color was the best option for me.

I asked Tara for advice on how to get by if you find yourself in a situation like mine with out of control damage and frizz, and she said that “it’s all about the products you use. A straightening serum or balm and flat iron” will help control frizz until you can get some hair therapy. She also suggested that if you are on a budget and can’t afford to get full corrective salon color or highlights to “call around and ask about getting just your t-zone colored.” Doing this would help temporarily fix your hair until you could go in for a full color or highlights. She added that any stylist should be able to help you with suggestions if you call them in a predicament in which it’s impossible to get to a salon before work the next day, or whatever the situation might be.

I have to say, I am amazed at the softness, shine and rich brown color my hair now has after salon coloring and guidance on hair products. I also never really believed all of the hype surrounding salon shampoos and conditioners, but Herbal Essences just doesn’t cut it after using Redken product. I owe it all to Tara and Catwalk Hair Studio for the magic she worked. She is amazing and all at the studio have a wealth of hair knowledge. So please, for the do-it-yourselfers out there, beware of the box!! (Take it from me, I spent a total of $35 – $40 after trying to fix my hair myself only for it to look ten times worse then before I began.)

Thank you Tara and to the owners of Catwalk Hair Studio – Tiffany Henley and Marietta Henley!  If you have a particular hair problem and want advice, give them a call: 979-774-7228. I find their pricing is not unreasonable and they are worth every penny! A cut/style for women ranges from $33 to $41, for men/children it is $21-$25, hair color ranges in price from $58 – $66, (they also offer a variety of other services) and they are open every day except Sunday.
