Healthcare summit
Last week’s healthcare summit failed to reveal a clear path forward for legislation. On Thursday, Feb. 25, President Obama met with congressional leaders from both parties. Republicans repeatedly demanded scrapping the bills that have already passed both Houses. Democrats ended the almost 7-hour debate with a pledge to move forward with or without Republican support. Democrats look increasingly likely to use the parliamentary tactic known as “reconciliation” to pass health care reform. The White House has now set a new deadline, Easter, April 4, by which to have passed health care legislation.
Marjah Offensive
U.S. Marines and Afghan troops continue to battle insurgents in Marjah, a southern Afghan town, as part of a NATO offensive. Their efforts constitute the largest military campaign of the eight year war in Afghanistan. Since fighting began Feb. 13, an estimated one-third of the town’s population has been displaced by the combat. However, recent reports suggest some families are beginning to return. Although commanders claim clearing operations may continue for another month, over the past few days NATO has been reporting fewer engagements with insurgents. To provide security to returning government officials and civilians, NATO troops will be stationed in the area for the next several months.
Chilean Quake
One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hit Chile on Saturday, Feb 27. The death toll currently exceeds 700, and more than 500,000 homes were destroyed. Two of the country’s largest cities, capital Santiago and Concepcion, suffered the brunt of the damage. Although only one-quarter of the country’s geography, this area is home to 80 percent of its population. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton arrived late Monday in Chile as part of an already planned weeklong trip to South America. She will offer support for rescue and recovery efforts.
