Texas A&M University named a new president, after a search was conducted to replace Elsa Murano who resigned this summer. The search committee submitted two possible candidates to the Board of Regents who announce the decision Thursday, and a 21-day waiting period is required before the appointment is official. Interim president Bowen Loftin was named as the new President of Texas A&M.
The economic downtown is forcing businesses and governments to restructure their budgets, and this is affecting both local governments and universities. Universities and colleges throughout the state were directed by state leaders arrange for a 5 percent reduction in spending. Texas A&M is preparing to eliminate $28 million from the universities budget over two years.
The City of Bryan is also attempting to eliminate $1.4 million from the city’s budget. Actions that the city will be taking to trim the money from the budget may include holding vacant positions open, delaying the Texas Avenue redevelopment project and the opening of a downtown health clinic for city employees, and upgrading traffic signals to LED lights.
