Texas Music Unplugged

We are lucky to live in a state rich with native talent that often times surpasses that of those in the global entertainment market. Maybe more lucky even to find ourselves in a town that both produces and attracts some of the best acts in the business each and every night of the week. On a large scale it is nearly impossible to ignore the impact that Texas Music has on our state. The people have created a culture rich with a meaningful understand for what a song is supposed to be and how it should be delivered. We have come a long way since the days of the lonely troubadours who lived with their thumbs in the wind, drifting from town to town to share their songs with anyone who would listen. Men like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Robert Earl Keen paved that road unaware of the generation that was to come along behind them. These men set the stage so that today’s largest Texas Music acts could grow a substantial fan base without having to leave their home state. Since the mid 90’s Texas has produced numerous nationally touring acts, from the big names that sell out venues across the state and nation every night of the week, to some you’ve probably never heard of before, but soon will. This land is ripe with talented young artists looking to start a fan base right here in College Station. Each week I will do my best to keep you up to date on the latest and greatest in Texas Music as these bands make their way through our local venues to play their music for you.
This week I challenge each of you take some time to explore the music around you by going to see a band you’ve never heard before. This is a great week for music on Northgate with two bands coming to town that I promise will not only catch your attention but put on a great show while they are at it.
On Wednesday night you can catch Hunter McKithan putting on a free acoustic show at La Bodega. I can not say enough about the music Hunter has been making over the past few years. Hunter captures a level of authenticity in his songwriting that is unsurpassed in most music today. He is without a doubt one of the most talented young songwriters on the scene and is sure to make waves in the near future. This is your chance to catch him before he hits it big. If you are into hard-line, soulful, Southern Rock ‘n’ Roll, you need to make your way over to Schotzi’s on Thursday night. Austin-based Rock Band, Uncle Lucius will be making their College Station debut this week. This is one band that is undeniably on their way to the forefront of Texas Music in 2010. They mix a raw Texas attitude with their soulful, throwback hippy style to provide their fans with a show that is sure to deliver night after night.
I highly recommend taking a little time out of your week to catch these bands. They never fail to provide a top-shelf performance. I hope each of you allow yourselves to discover new music this week, it’s all around you.
